The Mystic Sect knew too muchโtoo many secrets that were just plain creepy.
Landonโs initial plan was to wipe them all out, to eliminate the threat once and for all.
But Monroe had used the resurrection technique to persuade his terminally ill master.
Now, Landon wasnโt even a part of Project Azureveil anymore. He couldnโt even get through the front door, let alone offer his advice to the higher-ups.
โPorter, I canโt do it right now,โ Landon said.
โThen donโt let anyone know Amy is sick,โ Porter replied.
Landon nodded. โDonโt worry. Amy doesnโt know about this.โ
โYouโre still curious about the rebirth technique, arenโt you?โ Porter asked.
Landon grinned. โOf course I am. Kimseyโs got the healing power.โ
โWhat?โ Porterโs face went ashen.
โYeah, the healing technique youโve heard about,โ Landon added.
Porter fell into a long silence, gripping his rosary beads so tightly they were about to snap.
Having used the rebirth technique himself, he was certainly familiar with the healing technique.
โButโฆ how could it be Kimsey?โ he wondered.
Landon waited quietly.
โFreaking out? Itโs fine, weโre all family hereโletโs freak out together!โ Landon thought to himself.
After sharing the stress with Porter, he probably wouldnโt feel so overwhelmed.
After a long silence, Porter finally closed his eyes and murmured, โItโs not a rebirth techniqueโdead people canโt just come back to life. Itโsโฆ a rebirth technique.โ
โRebirth? You mean, going back to some moment before death?โ Landonโs brain felt like it was about to fry.
If he hadnโt watched a few rebirth dramas with Amelia, he wouldnโt even know this was a thing!
โExactly,โ Porter said, taking a deep breath. โItโs a gift the Zuckerbergs are born with.โ
Turns out, the Zuckerberg familyโs ancestors were actual priests. But as the centuries rolled by, they faded into just another ordinary family.
Rumor had it, the last priest, right before he died, passed down the rebirth technique to his descendants to keep the Zuckerberg family from being wiped outโand left behind an ancient tome.
But seriously, whoโd actually believe a story like that?
When Porter became the head of the family, he just rolled his eyes at the whole thing.
But then, when Catherine was killed by Joanna, Porter, in his desperation, remembered the ancient tome his ancestors had left behind.
After some wild, desperate attempts, he actually pulled it off.
He rewound time to just before Catherine died, got her out of there, and faked her death by swapping her with a decoy.
To cover his tracks, he burned the ancient tome.
But Joanna found out and barged in, trying to snatch it from him. In a panic, Porter tore out the page about the rebirth technique and gulped it down.
โSo, the side effect is Amy?โ Landon asked, his voice trembling. โEver since she was born, my mother-in-law started acting crazy. And now that Amyโs pregnant, will she start acting crazy too?โ
โYesโฆโ Porter nodded, looking miserable.
Heโd just wanted to be together with his wife again, never imagining the side effects would end up hurting his daughter.
โPorter, when Amy was pregnant with Kimsey, everything was normal,โ Landon said.
Porter sighed. โYeah, I was quietly watching over you back then.โ
Landon felt a sour ache in his chest.
โSo Porter had been looking out for us all along,โ Landon thought.
โMaybe itโs just a matter of probability,โ Porter said. โOnce Amy takes the Life Elixir, this wonโt happen again.โ
โOkay!โ Landon was relieved they had the Life Elixir. โBut, Porter, why didnโt you cure Amyโs mother?โ
โI didnโt succeed,โ Porter said. โAfter I left the Zuckerberg family, the ancient tome ended up in Joannaโs hands. It took me a while to find a cure. Even after I got the recipe, I kept failing to make the medicine. By the time I finally succeeded, Catherine had alreadyโฆโ
โI see,โ Landon said.
Landon pressed his lips together.
โDigging for the truth today probably made Porter sad all over again,โ Landon thought.
โThe side effects only affect Amy, not Kimsey. So you donโt have to worry, and thereโs no need for him to take the Life Elixir,โ Porter said.
Landon couldnโt help but ask, โHow did Kimsey end up with the healing power?โ
โOne of our ancestors was a priest with incredible medical skillsโฆ Maybe itโs genetic, maybe itโs not. I honestly canโt say. Itโs been centuries since someone like Kimsey popped up. Maybe itโs just fate that this kidโs got such crazy talent,โ Porter replied.
Porter sounded a bit lost, his voice trailing off.
Landon latched onto that. โGenetic! No doubt about it!โ
โIโve told you everything I know. Do you have any other questions?โ Porter asked.
โThank you for explaining everything. I have no more questions,โ Landon replied.
โAlright, letโs get out. We still need to deal with Marvel, since heโs read the ancient tome,โ Porter said.
โGot it!โ Landon nodded.
Landon and Porter got out of the car and headed to the cherry orchard to find Daniel and Amelia.
As for what they talked about in the car, that conversation would stay locked up tight between them.
He decided not to mention the story of rebirth to Amelia.
A gentle breeze rustled through the leaves.
Ameliaโs cheerful voice was carried on the wind.
โDaniel, the bunch of cherries right above your head is huge! And the ones to your leftโฆโ
Landon, worried that Honey might try to climb the tree herself, hurried over.
Amelia, wearing a sun hat, stood under the tree giving directions while Daniel climbed up to pick the cherries.
Landon let out a sigh of relief, then couldnโt help but laugh. โCome on, weโve already got a mountain of cherries, and you still want more?โ
โEating and picking are two totally different kinds of happiness,โ Amelia said with a cheeky grin. โSo, you finished chatting with my dad?โ
โYeah,โ said Lucia.
โWhat did you guys talk about?โ Amelia asked.
โI promised your dad Iโd love you and protect you for the rest of my life,โ Landon said, his eyes full of love.
Amelia rolled her eyes. โPfft! Like saying it out loud actually means anything?โ
โYou know whatโs in my heart, but your dad doesnโt. Some things just need to be said out loud,โ Landon said, giving her cheek a gentle pinch. โAlright, letโs head home!โ
โWeโre leaving already?โ Amelia asked.
Amelia glanced behind Landon, and just as sheโd hoped, she caught sight of Porterโs warm, gentle face.
She couldnโt help but smileโPorter really did look so kind.
โHer heart softened,โ Amelia thought, feeling a gentle warmth inside.
She whispered, โWhere is my dad? Is he coming back with us?โ
โNo,โ Landon said softly.
โOh?โ Amelia blinked, surprised.
Amelia felt a pang of disappointment.
โHe said heโs gotten used to his life now, but heโll drop by to see us every now and then,โ Landon said.
Amelia finally felt a bit of relief.
Landon blinked in surprise. โReally? Youโre not even a little mad at him?โ
โHe never wanted things to end up like this,โ Amelia said, shaking her head. โAfter all these years, heโs still loyal to my mom. Thatโs honestly pretty rare.โ
โYeah, it really is,โ Landon agreed.
Landon nodded.
With Porterโs wealth and status, even with Joanna still around, he couldโve easily lived it up or messed around if he wanted.
But he never did.
He kept watch over his wifeโs grave, stayed true in his heart, and never strayed.
Forget about rich guysโeven a down-and-out guy probably couldnโt have pulled that off.
โLandon, if I end up leaving before you, donโt spend your life alone for me. Go find someone whoโll really care for you, someone whoโll be there for you,โ Amelia said, leaning closer to Landon, soaking up his warmth.
Amelia nestled against Landon, drawing comfort from his presence.
Anyone would say her dad owed her, since he hadnโt been there for her growing up.
But looking at it from his side, itโs not like he had it easy either.
He couldnโt go home, couldnโt even call his kids his own. All he could do was live alone, holding onto memories of his late wife.
Amelia couldnโt bear the thought of Landon spending the rest of his life alone.
As long as it didnโt affect their kids, sheโd be willing to let him move on.
โOh!โ Amelia said softly, lost in her own sentimental thoughts.
Landonโs annoyed voice suddenly sounded above her, snapping her out of it.
โSo let me get this straightโif I go first, youโll just find someone else, huh?โ Landon asked, sounding a little miffed.
Amelia shook her head almost on reflex. โNo, I wouldnโt.โ
Seeing the frustration in his eyes, she quickly explained, โHaving you in my life is more than enough for me.โ
โWhat about me?โ Landon pinched her chin, baring his teeth in mock annoyance.
He really wanted to scold her, but he just couldnโt bring himself to do it.
Amelia froze for a moment, then realizedโwithout meaning to, sheโd hurt Landonโs feelings.
She pulled his fingers to her lips and gave them a soft kiss. โI know you are. Itโs justโฆ seeing my dad like that, it just breaks my heart for him.โ
โThen quit saying stuff like that and just stay with me, okay? Until weโre old and gray,โ Landon said, his anger fading away.
He couldnโt stay madโshe really did care about him.
โOh, thatโs right! Weโve got Kimsey! He can cure anything! So weโre all gonna be just fine,โ Amelia said with a cheeky grin, a wild idea popping into her mind.
โSo was my whole rebirth just a roll of the dice, or do I actually have some kind of natural superpower?โ Amelia mused to herself.
