Listen to this chapter:

The Mystic Sect knew too muchโ€”too many secrets that were just plain creepy.

Landonโ€™s initial plan was to wipe them all out, to eliminate the threat once and for all.

But Monroe had used the resurrection technique to persuade his terminally ill master.

Now, Landon wasnโ€™t even a part of Project Azureveil anymore. He couldnโ€™t even get through the front door, let alone offer his advice to the higher-ups.

โ€œPorter, I canโ€™t do it right now,โ€ Landon said.

โ€œThen donโ€™t let anyone know Amy is sick,โ€ Porter replied.

Landon nodded. โ€œDonโ€™t worry. Amy doesnโ€™t know about this.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re still curious about the rebirth technique, arenโ€™t you?โ€ Porter asked.

Landon grinned. โ€œOf course I am. Kimseyโ€™s got the healing power.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Porterโ€™s face went ashen.

โ€œYeah, the healing technique youโ€™ve heard about,โ€ Landon added.

Porter fell into a long silence, gripping his rosary beads so tightly they were about to snap.

Having used the rebirth technique himself, he was certainly familiar with the healing technique.

โ€˜Butโ€ฆ how could it be Kimsey?โ€™ he wondered.

Landon waited quietly.

โ€˜Freaking out? Itโ€™s fine, weโ€™re all family hereโ€”letโ€™s freak out together!โ€™ Landon thought to himself.

After sharing the stress with Porter, he probably wouldnโ€™t feel so overwhelmed.

After a long silence, Porter finally closed his eyes and murmured, โ€œItโ€™s not a rebirth techniqueโ€”dead people canโ€™t just come back to life. Itโ€™sโ€ฆ a rebirth technique.โ€

โ€œRebirth? You mean, going back to some moment before death?โ€ Landonโ€™s brain felt like it was about to fry.

If he hadnโ€™t watched a few rebirth dramas with Amelia, he wouldnโ€™t even know this was a thing!

โ€œExactly,โ€ Porter said, taking a deep breath. โ€œItโ€™s a gift the Zuckerbergs are born with.โ€

Turns out, the Zuckerberg familyโ€™s ancestors were actual priests. But as the centuries rolled by, they faded into just another ordinary family.

Rumor had it, the last priest, right before he died, passed down the rebirth technique to his descendants to keep the Zuckerberg family from being wiped outโ€”and left behind an ancient tome.

But seriously, whoโ€™d actually believe a story like that?

When Porter became the head of the family, he just rolled his eyes at the whole thing.

But then, when Catherine was killed by Joanna, Porter, in his desperation, remembered the ancient tome his ancestors had left behind.

After some wild, desperate attempts, he actually pulled it off.

He rewound time to just before Catherine died, got her out of there, and faked her death by swapping her with a decoy.

To cover his tracks, he burned the ancient tome.

But Joanna found out and barged in, trying to snatch it from him. In a panic, Porter tore out the page about the rebirth technique and gulped it down.

โ€œSo, the side effect is Amy?โ€ Landon asked, his voice trembling. โ€œEver since she was born, my mother-in-law started acting crazy. And now that Amyโ€™s pregnant, will she start acting crazy too?โ€

โ€œYesโ€ฆโ€ Porter nodded, looking miserable.

Heโ€™d just wanted to be together with his wife again, never imagining the side effects would end up hurting his daughter.

โ€œPorter, when Amy was pregnant with Kimsey, everything was normal,โ€ Landon said.

Porter sighed. โ€œYeah, I was quietly watching over you back then.โ€

Landon felt a sour ache in his chest.

โ€˜So Porter had been looking out for us all along,โ€™ Landon thought.

โ€œMaybe itโ€™s just a matter of probability,โ€ Porter said. โ€œOnce Amy takes the Life Elixir, this wonโ€™t happen again.โ€

โ€œOkay!โ€ Landon was relieved they had the Life Elixir. โ€œBut, Porter, why didnโ€™t you cure Amyโ€™s mother?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t succeed,โ€ Porter said. โ€œAfter I left the Zuckerberg family, the ancient tome ended up in Joannaโ€™s hands. It took me a while to find a cure. Even after I got the recipe, I kept failing to make the medicine. By the time I finally succeeded, Catherine had alreadyโ€ฆโ€

โ€œI see,โ€ Landon said.

Landon pressed his lips together.

โ€˜Digging for the truth today probably made Porter sad all over again,โ€™ Landon thought.

โ€œThe side effects only affect Amy, not Kimsey. So you donโ€™t have to worry, and thereโ€™s no need for him to take the Life Elixir,โ€ Porter said.

Landon couldnโ€™t help but ask, โ€œHow did Kimsey end up with the healing power?โ€

โ€œOne of our ancestors was a priest with incredible medical skillsโ€ฆ Maybe itโ€™s genetic, maybe itโ€™s not. I honestly canโ€™t say. Itโ€™s been centuries since someone like Kimsey popped up. Maybe itโ€™s just fate that this kidโ€™s got such crazy talent,โ€ Porter replied.

Porter sounded a bit lost, his voice trailing off.

Landon latched onto that. โ€˜Genetic! No doubt about it!โ€™

โ€œIโ€™ve told you everything I know. Do you have any other questions?โ€ Porter asked.

โ€œThank you for explaining everything. I have no more questions,โ€ Landon replied.

โ€œAlright, letโ€™s get out. We still need to deal with Marvel, since heโ€™s read the ancient tome,โ€ Porter said.

โ€œGot it!โ€ Landon nodded.

Landon and Porter got out of the car and headed to the cherry orchard to find Daniel and Amelia.

As for what they talked about in the car, that conversation would stay locked up tight between them.

He decided not to mention the story of rebirth to Amelia.

A gentle breeze rustled through the leaves.

Ameliaโ€™s cheerful voice was carried on the wind.

โ€œDaniel, the bunch of cherries right above your head is huge! And the ones to your leftโ€ฆโ€

Landon, worried that Honey might try to climb the tree herself, hurried over.

Amelia, wearing a sun hat, stood under the tree giving directions while Daniel climbed up to pick the cherries.

Landon let out a sigh of relief, then couldnโ€™t help but laugh. โ€œCome on, weโ€™ve already got a mountain of cherries, and you still want more?โ€

โ€œEating and picking are two totally different kinds of happiness,โ€ Amelia said with a cheeky grin. โ€œSo, you finished chatting with my dad?โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ said Lucia.

โ€œWhat did you guys talk about?โ€ Amelia asked.

โ€œI promised your dad Iโ€™d love you and protect you for the rest of my life,โ€ Landon said, his eyes full of love.

Amelia rolled her eyes. โ€œPfft! Like saying it out loud actually means anything?โ€

โ€œYou know whatโ€™s in my heart, but your dad doesnโ€™t. Some things just need to be said out loud,โ€ Landon said, giving her cheek a gentle pinch. โ€œAlright, letโ€™s head home!โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re leaving already?โ€ Amelia asked.

Amelia glanced behind Landon, and just as sheโ€™d hoped, she caught sight of Porterโ€™s warm, gentle face.

She couldnโ€™t help but smileโ€”Porter really did look so kind.

โ€˜Her heart softened,โ€™ Amelia thought, feeling a gentle warmth inside.

She whispered, โ€œWhere is my dad? Is he coming back with us?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Landon said softly.

โ€œOh?โ€ Amelia blinked, surprised.

Amelia felt a pang of disappointment.

โ€œHe said heโ€™s gotten used to his life now, but heโ€™ll drop by to see us every now and then,โ€ Landon said.

Amelia finally felt a bit of relief.

Landon blinked in surprise. โ€œReally? Youโ€™re not even a little mad at him?โ€

โ€œHe never wanted things to end up like this,โ€ Amelia said, shaking her head. โ€œAfter all these years, heโ€™s still loyal to my mom. Thatโ€™s honestly pretty rare.โ€

โ€œYeah, it really is,โ€ Landon agreed.

Landon nodded.

With Porterโ€™s wealth and status, even with Joanna still around, he couldโ€™ve easily lived it up or messed around if he wanted.

But he never did.

He kept watch over his wifeโ€™s grave, stayed true in his heart, and never strayed.

Forget about rich guysโ€”even a down-and-out guy probably couldnโ€™t have pulled that off.

โ€œLandon, if I end up leaving before you, donโ€™t spend your life alone for me. Go find someone whoโ€™ll really care for you, someone whoโ€™ll be there for you,โ€ Amelia said, leaning closer to Landon, soaking up his warmth.

Amelia nestled against Landon, drawing comfort from his presence.

Anyone would say her dad owed her, since he hadnโ€™t been there for her growing up.

But looking at it from his side, itโ€™s not like he had it easy either.

He couldnโ€™t go home, couldnโ€™t even call his kids his own. All he could do was live alone, holding onto memories of his late wife.

Amelia couldnโ€™t bear the thought of Landon spending the rest of his life alone.

As long as it didnโ€™t affect their kids, sheโ€™d be willing to let him move on.

โ€œOh!โ€ Amelia said softly, lost in her own sentimental thoughts.

Landonโ€™s annoyed voice suddenly sounded above her, snapping her out of it.

โ€œSo let me get this straightโ€”if I go first, youโ€™ll just find someone else, huh?โ€ Landon asked, sounding a little miffed.

Amelia shook her head almost on reflex. โ€œNo, I wouldnโ€™t.โ€

Seeing the frustration in his eyes, she quickly explained, โ€œHaving you in my life is more than enough for me.โ€

โ€œWhat about me?โ€ Landon pinched her chin, baring his teeth in mock annoyance.

He really wanted to scold her, but he just couldnโ€™t bring himself to do it.

Amelia froze for a moment, then realizedโ€”without meaning to, sheโ€™d hurt Landonโ€™s feelings.

She pulled his fingers to her lips and gave them a soft kiss. โ€œI know you are. Itโ€™s justโ€ฆ seeing my dad like that, it just breaks my heart for him.โ€

โ€œThen quit saying stuff like that and just stay with me, okay? Until weโ€™re old and gray,โ€ Landon said, his anger fading away.

He couldnโ€™t stay madโ€”she really did care about him.

โ€œOh, thatโ€™s right! Weโ€™ve got Kimsey! He can cure anything! So weโ€™re all gonna be just fine,โ€ Amelia said with a cheeky grin, a wild idea popping into her mind.

โ€˜So was my whole rebirth just a roll of the dice, or do I actually have some kind of natural superpower?โ€™ Amelia mused to herself.
