Chapter 428

Pinecrest was famous for its cherries, and right now, it was the height of cherry season.

Porter sat beneath a cherry tree, watching Lennon scramble and hop around, picking cherries with childlike excitement. A rare smile broke through his worn features.

Catherine was crazy about cherries, too. Every year, when the cherries were ripe, theyโ€™d head out to the orchards together, picking the freshest ones straight from the trees. Porter thought, โ€˜If only she were still hereโ€ฆโ€™

โ€œMr. Zuckerberg, are we making cherry wine again this year?โ€ Lennon called out.

โ€œYeah,โ€ said Lucia.

Porter gave a small nod. He never cared much for fruit, but every time they went cherry picking, Catherine would always come back with baskets overflowing. Cherries were delicate and didnโ€™t keep long, so Catherine would turn them into cherry wine. On quiet nights, the two of them would sip it together under the moon, savoring the moment. But those tender, loveโ€“filled nights never came again. Still, every year, Porter made a batch of cherry wine. Some habits were just too deepโ€“rooted to break.

โ€œMr. Zuckerberg, should we send some to Lunova?โ€ Lennon asked. โ€œWe could fly them over. Theyโ€™d still be fresh when they get there.โ€

โ€œNo need,โ€ Porter said.

โ€œBut you still miss them, donโ€™t youโ€ฆโ€ Lennon pressed.

โ€œJust seeing them happy from afar is enough for me,โ€ Porter replied. He closed his eyes and drew a cross.

Lennon shook her head, baffled. He obviously cares about his family, but he keeps himself apart, never stepping back into the world. Doesnโ€™t he ever feel like heโ€™s missing out?โ€™ Lennon wondered. โ€˜I wonder if Dan ever managed to make the Life Elixir. And is Amelia finally cured?โ€˜ Lennon thought.

Outside the cherry orchard, things suddenly became noisyโ€”cars and voices everywhere. Porter opened his eyes, ready to leave with Lennon. After years spent in seclusion, he longed for the hustle and bustle of the outside world. Whenever anything out of the ordinary happened, his first instinct was always to slip away. But Lennon was still young, and she loved a good spectacle. She deliberately dragged her feet tidying up, constantly peeking out to catch a glimpse of the commotion.

โ€œLennon, how many times have I told you? Stop being so nosy,โ€ came Porterโ€™s quiet, steady voice.

Lennon had no choice but to hurry up.

Porter and Lennon stepped outside the cherry orchardโ€”and stopped in their tracks.

At the entrance stood Daniel, with Amelia and Landon right beside him.

When Daniel saw Porter, he was visibly emotional. โ€œDadโ€ฆโ€

Amelia, meeting her real father for the first time, felt completely lost. โ€˜Should I go up to him? Should I admit who I am?โ€™ she wondered, frozen in place.

โ€œGo on,โ€ Landon said softly, encouraging her.

If Ameliaโ€™s illness really was inherited from Catherine, then today, it would finally be resolved. As her father, Porter had both the duty and responsibility to cure Amyโ€™s illness.

โ€œDad, I finally found you,โ€ Daniel said, gripping Porterโ€™s hand tightly, afraid he might run off.

Porter closed his eyes, and when he opened them again, he was calm. He turned to Lennon.

โ€œI swear I didnโ€™t say a word!โ€ Lennon protested quickly.

โ€œI found you on my own,โ€ Daniel said.

Porter took a deep breath. โ€œIโ€™ve left the world behindโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThe Life Elixir is here,โ€ Daniel pulled out a small bottle. โ€œTell me, will it cure Amy? Can a pregnant woman take it? Are there any side effects?โ€

Amelia was stunned. โ€˜What Life Elixir? Iโ€™ve never even heard of it!โ€™ she thought.

โ€œYes, it can cure her.โ€ Porter finally turned to look at Amelia, his gaze softening as he faced his daughter. He didnโ€™t need any dramatic scene or big revealโ€”he just knew, deep down, she was his child.

Amy looked so much like Catherine, Porter couldnโ€™t help but feel a pang of nostalgia every time he saw her. Whenever he saw her as an adult, it was like Catherineโ€™s youth had come back to life right in front of him.

โ€˜Iโ€ฆ Iโ€ฆโ€™ Amelia stammered, wringing her hands nervously.

Landon teased, โ€œWhat happened to that fiery temper? At home you boss me around, but now youโ€™re acting like a scaredyโ€“cat.โ€

Amelia shot him an embarrassed glare. โ€œSeriously? Can you not pick the worst possible moment?โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s there to be afraid of? My fatherโ€“inโ€“law knows you better than anyone,โ€ Landon looked at Porter. โ€œIsnโ€™t that right, sir?โ€

Porter nodded, gently moving past Daniel and walking straight to Amelia. โ€œAmy, itโ€™s meโ€”your dad.โ€

โ€œDadโ€ฆโ€ Ameliaโ€™s voice caught in her throat. After all these years, she was finally reunited with her real father.

โ€œMy dear Amy, Iโ€™m so sorryโ€ฆโ€ Porter sighed. โ€œLandon came to see me, but I just didnโ€™t have the courage to face you.โ€

โ€œHe told meโ€ฆโ€ Amelia stammered, suddenly shy and nothing like her usual sharpโ€“tongued self.

Porter looked at his daughter, eyes full of tenderness and regret. โ€œThereโ€™s another reason I stayed away. Joanna.โ€

โ€œYeah, I understand,โ€ Amelia said softly, trying to reassure him. She just nodded, not saying anything else.

Porter had so many regrets and apologies bottled up inside, but seeing Amelia like this, he realized she didnโ€™t seem to need any of that. He honestly didnโ€™t know what else to say.

They stood there, looking at each other, hearts racing with emotion, but words just werenโ€™t enough. Maybe they didnโ€™t need to say anything at all. Theyโ€™d long accepted each otherโ€™s existence, and now, whether they met or not, it didnโ€™t matter anymoreโ€”theyโ€™d already made peace with it.

โ€œDad, you picked so many cherries?โ€ Daniel asked. โ€œAmy loves cherries, just like Mom used to.โ€

โ€œGo ahead and load them all up in the car,โ€ Porter told Lennon. There were several huge basketsโ€”no way anyone could finish all that.

Landon quickly jumped in. โ€œJust a few is enough for us. We canโ€™t eat that many.โ€

โ€œAlright then. Iโ€™ll bring some cherry wine over for you guys once itโ€™s ready,โ€ Porter said.

Danielโ€™s eyes widened. โ€œDad, you actually know how to brew wine?โ€

Porter chuckled. โ€œYour mom taught me, way back when.โ€

Now that his kids were standing right in front of him, bringing up his late wife didnโ€™t hurt nearly as much as it used to. If he didnโ€™t have to worry about Joanna stirring things up, heโ€™d probably just go home with them.

โ€œMom was awesome, wasnโ€™t she?โ€ Amelia asked in a quiet voice.

Porterโ€™s face shone with pride. โ€œAbsolutely! Catherine was the coolest girl in all of Lunova.โ€

Amelia smiled, tilting her head up to the sky as she blinked away her tears. โ€˜Mom, are you watching from up there? Dadโ€™s bragging about you!โ€˜ she thought. โ€˜If it hadnโ€™t been for Joanna, you and Dad wouldโ€™ve been the happiest couple on earth.โ€˜

โ€œPorter, can we talk in private?โ€ Landon said.

Porter nodded.

Amelia frowned in confusion. โ€˜Wasnโ€™t today supposed to be about reuniting with my dad?โ€˜ she wondered.

Daniel came over and said, โ€œAmy, letโ€™s take a walk through the cherry orchard.โ€

Amelia felt a little uneasy. โ€˜What are they going to talk about?โ€˜ she thought.

โ€œItโ€™s about Project Azureveilโ€”something to do with the Zuckerbergs, but let them talk it out. We donโ€™t need to get involved,โ€ Daniel said with a gentle smile.

Lennon grinned, โ€œAmy, I know exactly which tree has the sweetest cherries. Come on, Iโ€™ll take you there.โ€

โ€œOkay, I guess,โ€ Amelia replied. She kept glancing back over her shoulder with every step, clearly distracted. โ€˜Landon quit Project Azureveil ages ago. Why are they still giving him assignments?โ€˜ Amelia wondered, puzzled. โ€˜Besides, Danโ€™s the one in charge now. If Project Azureveil needs anything, shouldnโ€™t they be reaching out to him instead?โ€˜ Amy thought.

โ€œAmy, whenโ€™s your due date?โ€ Daniel asked, clearly trying to change the subject. He started chatting about Edith and Maisie instead, totally distracting Amelia from her worries. Sure enough, Amyโ€™s attention was completely diverted.

Landon, worried someone might be eavesdropping, made sure to have the conversation with Porter inside the car.

Porter was clutching the Life Elixir, already guessing what Landon was about to ask. โ€œSo, what do you want to know?โ€

โ€œPorter, just how many people know about the resurrection spell?โ€ Landon asked.

Porter wasnโ€™t too happy about it. โ€œDaniel told you, didnโ€™t he?โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ Landon replied.

โ€œThat kid just canโ€™t keep anything to himself,โ€™ Porter thought, shaking his head.

โ€œHonestly, Porter, I donโ€™t care about any of that. My only concern is keeping Amy and the Zuckerbergs safe,โ€ Landon said.

Porter paused, uncertain.

โ€œIf youโ€™d rather not say, thatโ€™s okay. Just tell meโ€”will this ever happen to Amy again?โ€ Landon asked, worry clear in his voice.

โ€œNo,โ€ Porter replied. โ€œHer condition really is inherited from her mother, but the Life Elixir will completely cure her.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s a relief.โ€ Landon let out a long breath. He finally relaxed, but the tension in his eyes lingered. Still, he couldnโ€™t shake off the nagging worry in his heart.

โ€œPorter Marvel actually figured out the book. Heโ€™s dead set on believing resurrection magic is real, and honestly, Iโ€™m worried about what he might do next. Do you have any advice?โ€ Landon asked.

โ€œKill him,โ€ Porterโ€™s eyes flashed with a cold, dangerous glint.
