“It’s fine, just follow the usual rules. Mom already said this was arranged by Grandpa, so it wouldn’t be right to break it.”

Aurora smiled softly at Lucas, letting the matter go. Seeing how quickly she eased her mind, Lucas curved his lips. “Come on, Grandpa will be coming out soon. Let’s go greet him.”

“Alright, I’ll follow your lead.”

Aurora left with Lucas and the others. Before leaving, she made sure to tell Megan that they would go out for dinner after the banquet. Megan nodded eagerly. “Alright, I’ll wait for you.”

After Aurora walked away, Megan’s parents came to her side. They spoke in hushed tones. “Megan, you have to remember your place. Right now, we can’t draw too close to Aurora.”

“Just like in past years, when I couldn’t stay close to Aunt, right?”

Their hearts ached hearing this. They hadn’t realized Megan thought that way. When had it come to this–forcing their daughter into such grievance? Had it been the same in years past?

They always believed they cherished her, yet why couldn’t they even allow such a small request? In occasions like this, was their daughter always meant to stand aside and simply watch? The thought left them unsettled. Perhaps they had been wrong in how they taught her. Perhaps their way of raising her had missed the mark.

Noticing their conflicted faces, Megan suddenly lifted a bright smile. “It’s nothing, really. Don’t worry, I was only speaking offhand. You don’t need to take it seriously. I know you’re only looking out for me. Aurora isn’t who she used to be–now that she’s married to my cousin, their relationship will probably be made public soon. Staying too close to her wouldn’t be appropriate.”

Her parents exchanged a look, and seeing how thoughtful and considerate their daughter was, their hearts grew even heavier.

Megan’s father made the decision on the spot. “Megan, we’ll raise your allowance. It used to be two hundred thousand a month, but now it’ll be three hundred thousand.”

“That’s right,” her mother chimed in. “I’ll make the call–let’s make it one million.”

They spoke one after the other. With each word, Megan’s eyes widened further. She had only been sighing out of sentiment, not angling for a bigger allowance. Who would have thought her parents would take it that way!? But since they were so insistent, it would seem rude to refuse. Better to just go along with it.

“Dad, Mom, are you serious?”

She blinked her wide eyes, looking at them with innocent curiosity.

Already drowning in guilt and self–reproach, her parents didn’t think twice. They both nodded firmly.

“Of course. When have we ever lied to you? If we say we’re raising your allowance, then it’s raised. And what we withheld before, we’ll return to you.”

“Perfect, I’ve recorded this.”

In the next second, Megan slipped her phone back into her pocket with a triumphant smile. It was only then that her parents realized something was off. Had they just been tricked? But seeing the bright grin on her face, they brushed the thought away. She was just a child, after all. What harm could there be in a little mischief?
