Chapter 781

After Ryanโ€™s divorce, Edwardโ€™s possessiveness toward me became a lot more obvious. He sent me a text at noonโ€”just some casual greetingsโ€”but I could tell he was different from before.

โ€˜Some feelings only really matter when thereโ€™s competition,โ€™ I thought to myself, a little darkly.

I replied truthfully, just to put his mind at ease.

My business with Frank Wallace was officially wrapped up.

But for some reason, three days later, someone new in charge from their company reached out, saying they wanted to revisit the partnership.

They sounded genuinely interested, so I didnโ€™t turn them down. I brought two of my senior execs and went out for dinner with them.

At the dinner, a middle-aged woman with a commanding presence walked over, shook my hand, and introduced herself as the new representative.

โ€œMr. Leigh, are you aware of the deal that fell through with Mr. Wallace last time?โ€ I asked directly.

Mr. Leighโ€™s face turned serious. โ€œFrank Wallace was arrested for financial fraud and embezzlement. Iโ€™ll be handling this part of the business from now on. Weโ€™ve reviewed the potential of working with Ms. Murphy, and it looks very promising.โ€

I kept a smile on my face, but inside, I was shocked to my core.

โ€˜Frank got arrested already? That fast?โ€™ I thought, barely able to believe it.

โ€œItโ€™s crazy how unpredictable life can be. So, how did Mr. Wallace end up getting caught?โ€ I couldnโ€™t help but ask.

Mr. Leigh shot me a look of disdain. โ€œIsnโ€™t it only natural for someone shady to get caught?โ€

From the way he said that, I could tell Mr. Leigh definitely knew more than he was letting on.

โ€œYouโ€™re right,โ€ I agreed, not pushing the topic any further. I didnโ€™t really know Frank, so I let it drop.

After that, we just talked business, and things went pretty well.

After dinner, I headed back to the office, pretty sure Edward had helped me out in a big way.

So, on my way back, I swung by the mall and carefully picked out a menโ€™s razor and a tie. I wrapped them up, planning to give them to Edward as a little thank-you present as soon as I got in.

Even though we were officially together now, I still wanted to keep the little gestures alive. It was all part of the fun of being a couple.

When I got back to the office and was walking down the hall, I spotted Edward in his office, deep in a meeting.

I didnโ€™t bother him and just kept going. By a little after five, everyone was heading home.

Edward came over and knocked on my door. I looked up at him, and he gave me a gentle smile. โ€œBusy day? I havenโ€™t seen you around all afternoon,โ€ he said.

I arched an eyebrow, stood up with a grin, and teased, โ€œYou already know what Iโ€™ve been up to, donโ€™t you?โ€

Edward looked a little taken aback.

But I totally missed the look on his face as I turned to grab the gifts Iโ€™d bought. โ€œI swung by the mall this afternoon and got these for you to say thanks,โ€ I said, handing them over.

Edward just eyed the gifts, not taking them right away. Instead, he crossed his arms and looked down at me with a smirk. โ€œSo, what am I getting thanked for, exactly?โ€

I figured he was just teasing me, so I uncrossed his arms and squeezed into his embrace. โ€œQuit teasing me. Just admit you helped me out, instead of making me guess.โ€

Edward looked even more confused, staring down at me. โ€œVictoria, youโ€™d better spell it out, or you might be giving that gift to the wrong guy.โ€

I stiffened, looking up at him. โ€œWasnโ€™t it you who helped me land the Victory Group deal?โ€

Edward frowned. โ€œVictory Group? I really donโ€™t know what youโ€™re talking about.โ€

I quickly turned around, grabbed the letter of intent, and handed it to him.

Edward just glanced at it, set it down, and leaned on my desk, his voice calm. โ€œI honestly donโ€™t know anything about this. You mustโ€™ve started working on this deal while I was in the UK.โ€
