Chapter 1432

โ€œAre you alright?โ€ Grace couldnโ€™t help asking, her voice soft with worry.

No matter what, Tessa had always been the sensible oneโ€”the daughter who cared about her and understood her best.

With Tessaโ€™s frail health, Grace had always found it easier to show her affection.

Hearing her motherโ€™s concern, Tessa gave a small, obedient shake of her head. โ€œIโ€™m fine, Mom. You donโ€™t have to worry about me. Sometimes I feel like I donโ€™t even deserve your care.โ€

Graceโ€™s heart ached at that. โ€œDonโ€™t say that. You deserve the best of everything.โ€

But Tessa didnโ€™t seem to believe it. โ€œI know Iโ€™ve held you back. I know I canโ€™t compare to my sister. But please believe me, Mom, I really am trying.โ€

โ€œI told you before, youโ€™re not holding me back,โ€ Grace sighed. โ€œDonโ€™t overthink it. I was too harsh just now, and you shouldnโ€™t take it to heart. You know how I amโ€”sometimes I speak before I think. People say things they donโ€™t mean when theyโ€™re angry.โ€

She exhaled again, frustration and guilt mingling in her chest. โ€œBesides, I was mostly upset because of Aurora. Compared to you, that child is just soโ€ฆ thoughtless.โ€

โ€œMom, donโ€™t be angry with her,โ€ Tessa said gently, trying to comfort her. โ€œSheโ€™s still young and doesnโ€™t understand much yet. I believe once sheโ€™s older, sheโ€™ll realize how hard things have been for you. When that happens, sheโ€™ll stand by you and help you.โ€

Grace pressed her fingers to her temples, exhaustion clouding her features. โ€œI only wish she could be as understanding as you. If she were more like you, I could finally rest easy.โ€

โ€œShe will be. Iโ€™ll talk to her when I get the chance,โ€ Tessa promised softly.

Grace gave a weary smile and pulled Tessa into her arms. โ€œYouโ€™re such a good daughter. Iโ€™m sorry, sweetheart. Youโ€™ve always carried more than your share, and I never know how to show you the love you deserve.โ€

All the more so because Tessaโ€™s performance truly couldnโ€™t compare to Auroraโ€™s.

The board had been putting her under immense pressure, and sometimes she had no idea how to handle it on her own.

Once or twice would have been fine, but as the mistakes piled up, Graceโ€™s patience began to wear thin.

If Tessa didnโ€™t start improving soon, she wasnโ€™t sure how much longer she could shield her from the boardโ€™s criticism.

With that thought, Grace decided to speak plainly. โ€œTessa, itโ€™s not that I donโ€™t want to help you, but you really need to start pushing yourself. Take the company, for example. If I keep stepping in for you, what will everyone else think?

โ€œYou have to understand that. If thereโ€™s something you donโ€™t know, you can always come to me, or ask one of the senior assistants at the office, but you need to learn to handle things on your own too.

โ€œThere are so many eyes on you right now. I want to see you grow, and thatโ€™s exactly why I canโ€™t interfere in your work anymore. Do you understand what I mean?โ€

Every word came from the heart. Grace truly empathized with how difficult things were for Tessa and appreciated how considerate sheโ€™d always been.

But the world was cruel, and Grace knew it too wellโ€”if Tessa didnโ€™t grow stronger, sheโ€™d be left behind.
