โMomโฆ do you really think I can do it?โ
Tessaโs hands stilled as she spoke, her eyes glistening with tears. When Grace looked up, she caught sight of a single tear sliding down her daughterโs cheek. The sight pierced her heart. She hadnโt realized how much pressure Tessa had been under. All this time, she thought sheโd been protecting her well enoughโthat Tessa didnโt have to worry about these things. But now she saw how naรฏve that thought had been.
โYouโฆโ
Before Grace could finish, Tessaโs tears began to fall even harder. โIโm sorry, Mom. I know I havenโt done well, but I really am trying my best. Iโve seen how much pressure youโve been under lately. Even if I didnโt say it out loud, I know youโre exhausted.โ
โTessa, donโt think that way. Youโre already doing well.โ
Seeing her cry like that, Grace grew flustered and quickly reached out to comfort her. โYou just need to be yourself. You donโt have to compare yourself to anyone else. Thinking like that is a mistake. As long as youโre better today than you were yesterday, thatโs already enough.โ
โI just want to help you, Mom. I donโt want to be your burden.โ
Grace took her hand gently, and Tessa sank down beside her. Seeing her daughter in tears, Graceโs heart softened completely. She wrapped an arm around her shoulders and pulled her into her embrace. โDonโt think like that, sweetheart. Youโve never been a burden to me. Youโre my precious girl. Youโve always meant the world to me. If you keep saying things like that, youโll make me upset.โ
Graceโs voice was steady and full of warmth as she reassured her. Tessa wasnโt as capable as Aurora in business, but she was driven, and that alone meant everything. Grace truly couldnโt ask for more. Watching Tessa cry like that, Graceโs heart ached. She hadnโt realized that her own unspoken pressure had been passed on to her daughter. Sheโd always believed sheโd shielded Tessa well enough from all that.
When Tessa lifted her tear-filled eyes to look at her, her voice trembled. โMom, do you really mean that?โ
โOf course I do,โ Grace said with a soft smile. โNo oneโs perfect, and no one is naturally good at everything. All we can do is keep trying.โ
โMmโฆ thank you, Mom.โ Tessa threw herself into her motherโs arms, clinging tightly. Then, as if remembering something, she hesitated. โOh, right, Mom, about that thing I mentioned to youโฆ you didnโt tell my sister, did you?โ
Grace looked a little puzzled. โWhy? Canโt I tell her?โ
โItโs not that,โ Tessa said quickly, her tone cautious. โItโs justโฆ it doesnโt seem appropriate. After all, the Carter family banquet was a private event, not something made public. If she finds out, wonโt she be upset with me?โ Her voice wavered as she spoke, fingers tightening slightly, her expression full of hesitation.
โI donโt think sheโll be,โ Grace replied after a pause, recalling Auroraโs calm reaction earlier. โYouโre probably overthinking it.โ
But Tessa shook her head earnestly. โMom, my sister isnโt as simple as you think. So, if you do tell her, please let me know first. That way, if she brings it up later, Iโll be prepared.โ
