Seeing how obedient she seemed, Aaron finally relaxed. He leaned closer and murmured, “Don’t worry. Whatever you want, I’ll give you, as long as you stay by my side.”

At those words, a chill ran through Tessa, but she still lifted her head and looked at him with a fawning smile. She knew she couldn’t afford to fall out with him now. They were stuck in the same boat. If she turned against him here, it would only hurt them both, and the others at the banquet would laugh at her.

“Aaron, I always knew you were the best to me. I’ll stay by your side forever.”

When it came to sweet words, Tessa delivered them effortlessly. There wasn’t a trace of hesitation; every expression on her face was carefully rehearsed. She had practiced in front of the mirror a hundred times, knowing exactly which angle drew a man’s gaze. She also knew how to showcase her most perfect side.

Sure enough, when Aaron saw her smile, half his body went weak. “You really are a little enchantress.”

At that, Tessa’s smile froze. How could this man sound so cringey, even with a young face? His words sickened her to the core.

Her gaze shifted to Lucas, surrounded by people, and she slowly clenched her fists. She didn’t even realize her manicured nails had dug into her palms until pain jolted her back to reality. She hadn’t expected it–the man she once dismissed as a sugar baby turned out to be the head of a top-tier family. And now, Aurora’s value had skyrocketed beyond measure.

Aaron noticed Tessa’s strange expression and how her eyes lingered on Lucas. He finally spoke up. “He’s the youngest head of the family in our generation. His intelligence and looks are far beyond ordinary–this was tested when he was just a child.”

“Really? Then how did he and the current lady of the house meet?” Tessa deliberately tried to probe.

Being a spoiled playboy, Aaron didn’t think much of her question. “I’m not really sure. Judging from how everyone’s reacting, this should be the first time they’ve met her. Until now, no one even knew she existed.” He scratched his head. “But that’s not my concern. It’s all the business of the main branch. Since Grandfather seems pleased, we should just accept her as the matriarch.”

Tessa kept quiet. She couldn’t help casting him a sideways glance, wondering if he was truly stupid or just pretending. How could he have no ambition at all? Even if the matriarch came from nowhere, he accepted it so easily? Didn’t he realize that without a wife, the inheritance would be spread more widely among the family? Now that Lucas had a wife, children were sure to follow. His fortune would be passed to them, leaving the side branches with even less.

Aaron had no idea what Tessa was really thinking. If he had, he would have laughed outright. After all, the Carter fortune stretched across the nation and even abroad. Their holdings were vast–far beyond what Tessa imagined.
