"Itโs all arranged, and I got the information you wanted. But whether you can actually convince him to come, thatโs on you."
Markโs expression grew uneasy. "You should know, this doctor is infamous for his temper. On top of that, a few years back, a medical accident left him deeply traumatized. He still hasnโt recovered. Heโs always believed that if it hadnโt been for his mistake, that patient wouldnโt have died."
Rachel had already read a bit about the case before she came. The doctor had performed countless successful surgeries without issue. But five years ago, something happened that scarred him for life.
During one procedure, his assistant, a young and inexperienced doctor, handed him low-concentration heparin instead of saline solution. The doctor glanced at the label but failed to notice that the assistant had given him the wrong tray. Once the drug was injected, the patientโs blood-clotting function suddenly went haywire. The doctor stopped the injection immediately and tried to resuscitate, but they had already missed the critical period. Complications set in, and the patient didnโt make it. That incident became the doctorโs lifelong burden.
Markโs expression darkened. "You need to be mentally prepared. Over the years, his family has brought in countless specialists, including psychiatrists and medications. None of it worked. If anything, his condition has only gotten worse."
Rachel knew this wouldnโt be easy. But for Cecilia, this was the only shot. She had to try. "Alright. Letโs head back to the hotel. We can talk on the way."
"Okay."
Rachel turned around, about to say something to Yale and Jerry, when she saw them locked in a heated argument. Their faces were flushed red. She knew Jerryโs personality. He was stubborn to the bone, never backing down, especially given how young he was.
Rachel glanced awkwardly at Mark. "Sorry, let me handle this." She walked over and tugged Jerry aside. She lowered her voice. "Do you even realize where we are? This is a public place! What are you two doing, yelling here?"
The moment Jerry saw Rachel, his head hung low. "Sorry, Rachel."
Rachel glanced at Yale. "Itโs not that big of a deal. Letโs go."
That shut them up, and they quietly followed her into the car. Once inside, Mark spoke again. This time, he sounded troubled. "By the way, about the last time you shifted those projects around, wordโs already spread. I think you should avoid rushing back for now. Youโll have a hard time explaining yourself."
Rachel understood. She had pulled several projects from both the main company and the subsidiary company and reassigned them to Tylerโs company, which had cost the company. To top it off, she had done it without informing anyone, which made her liability even greater. Mark didnโt want to pressure her right now, but things had reached the point where he couldnโt keep covering for her.
"And youโd better brace yourself. If the main company and the subsidiary company decide to sue you, they will do it at all costs. Do you get what Iโm saying?"
"I know. Once I settle things with the doctor, Iโll try to negotiate with the main company. Maybe I can make it up to them with other projects." She knew if the company went after her, it would be over lost profits. If she could minimize that loss, they might back off.
Mark chuckled. "I get what youโre saying, but hereโs the problem. Iโve heard those projects you reassigned ended up in your boyfriendโs company. Right? You donโt even have a company of your own here. And without one, youโve got no leverage. What exactly do you think you have to bargain with?"
